MERRY CHRISTMAS

Tomorrow is our class party so the students can come in free dress with a Christmas theme – Christmas hat, tinsel, Christmas t-shirts etc. They should have all brought home a note with a suggested idea of what to bring along to share for lunch. We will also be doing a Kris Kringle so if you haven’t brought in your pressie please remember it tomorrow.

As this is the last 4/5A blog post ever (!) I would like to thank the students and parents for all of their support and assistance throughout the year in our school’s only composite class. I believe its been a great year and the students have had the unique opportunity of getting to know, and working with, students from a different year level.  There have definitely been some lovely friendships made. I have really enjoyed teaching all of these students and I’m lucky enough to be teaching the Grade 4’s again next year when they return as Grade 5’s. So thanks again for sharing this journey in the ‘just a little bit fancy’ grade 4/5 composite class.

Have a lovely, relaxing Christmas with family and friends as well as enjoying the summer holidays.

Merry Christmas from Mrs Ev.

WEEK 9

Hi all,

It’s lovely to come back to 25 happy, smiling faces after a very busy 2 weeks in Europe. As we swing into December we have started putting up some Christmas decorations and an advent calendar. I can’t believe it is nearly Christmas again!

We will be doing some Christmas cooking next Wednesday morning and I’d love some parent helpers if anyone is available from 9-11? A note went home last night about Kris Kringle and about the Christmas activities which is $4 per student to cover ingredient. I have attached a copy of the notice here:

Christmas in 45A 2014

In November a note went home about changes in family details. This notice is important for your child and the office staff so that we ensure we have accurate up to date contact information in case we need to contact. If you have not returned this document please do so as soon as possible. I still have 9 notices that have not been returned. It is just as important to return the notice if none of your details have changed.

The last homework is due in tomorrow: Friday 5th December

Grade 4 – diary with reading listed

Grade 5 – diary with reading listed and an inquiry task from the grid.

Check out the diary dates page for all of the end of year dates.

Have a great week!

WEEK 4 TERM 4

This week we will be electing our new government for our Earn and Learn Nation. The new government will begin to learn their roles and receive their pay rise in Earn and Learn dollars! We also had our first parent career talks today. We still have some times left for parents to came and talk to the students about their jobs. I have attached the notice with the dates below.

Parent Careers Notice

In Maths we are finding out about different angles and how to use protractors. Some students are learning to calculate interior/exterior and supplementary angles as well as basic trigonometry which is mathematics that studies relationships involving lengths and angles of triangles. The Grade 4’s are creating scale models of a bike using their knowledge of angles and length.

We will be creating these bike models on THURSDAY from 9 – 11 am ANY PARENT HELPERS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED as we will need assistance cutting the dowel and using the hot glue guns.

The Grade 4’s will be commencing their newspaper this week with each student creating a different section of our weekly newspaper. They will be able to start by writing about the adventure we had in 4/5A today….some students discovered a little plover chick on the oval that was having some trouble and being attacked by magpies. After discovering that it was not able to get back to its nest and on advice from the RSPCA we ended up with a little class pet for the rest of the day! The little chick had a great time wandering around our room and is now in the safe hands of wildlife carers! All just a day in the life of 4/5A!!!!!

WEEK 3 TERM 4

thank-you

WOW! What a huge weekend at the Fete. I hope you all had a fantastic time. It was perfect weather for all of the fun things happening around our school. I’d like to say a HUGE thank–you to all of the parents, students and siblings that helped out with the preparation of the Lucky Bags and for running the stall on Saturday. The success of our stall wouldn’t have been possible without you!

The topic talks are going really well. We have had some very amusing news reports and been taught lots about photographers, builders and architects. Keep up the great standard 4/5A.

 GRADE 5…..

The Earn and Learn unit is continuing to raise some great questions from the students about finances and money management. Last week we learned about how tax works and superannuation. Today we were learning about insurance – in Grade 5 we have ‘homework insurance’ and the student learn about a good risk or a bad risk in terms insurance through their regularity of handing in homework. The students find it fascinating that it is possible to pay insurance month after month but never get the money back unless they make claim – great learning experience for them. In Literacy they are writing application letters and resumes to apply for government jobs in our nation.

GRADE 4…..

We are continuing looking at how we communicate in this modern digital age and how communication has changed over the time. With digital technology changing how news and other information is communicated we have been designing QR (quick response) codes.  These codes which are now commonly seen on merchandise and advertising create short cuts to websites, blogs, and video clips. We have now begun to create our own persuasive adverts with tellagami’s which are digital avatars that communicate information in a fun way. Check out these ones that our grade fours created today:

Dakotas Tellagami

IMG_2920 – Jodie’s Tellagami

If the above links don’t work get your kids to show you how they are using these digital technologies by checking out the apps on the apps page.

As Bike Ed. is running concurrently with our communication unit, some of the activities we are doing in the classroom will be about bicycle safety. One fantastic activity is the children get to make a dowel bike. The notice has gone home and needs to be returned for two reasons. One so we can buy the dowel and hot glue and secondly to see who is available to help us make them, because we need to cut the dowel, make sure their measurements are correct and hot glue their bikes together. We will be making these bikes next week on Tuesday and Thursday, so please return the note if you can help out.

It’s Walktober!! This means that every day during October we are encouraging everyone to walk or ride to school. If you live too far from school to walk then you can meet at the Alchester Shops and meet up with friends and catch the walking school bus to school.

WEEK 2 TERM 4

Week 2 and all is well!!!

This week’s homework seems to be coming along nicely, the grade 4’s have written some great news reports and I’m looking forward to hearing them next week. The Grade 5’s have been very busy gathering information about a particular job or career that interests them and I have heard some whispers about two students presenting a talk about a chefs and waitresses…will there be any samples I wonder?? These talks are due in on Monday the 20th October.

This week we are continuing on with fractions and decimals in maths and next week we will be conducting a maths investigation that involves the students designing their own fraction and decimal dominoes…..it is more challenging than it sounds!!

Bike ed is progressing very well with all students developing their emergency stops and signaling. Remember that if any parents would like to help out with the bike ed sessions they are more than welcome – especially the Grade 5 ride to Bayswater Train Park on Thursday the 6th of November.

A FRESH TERM….A FRESH BLOG PAGE….

WEEK 1 TERM 4

Hi all, welcome back. I hope you had a lovely relaxing holiday. This term we have bike ed and the Fete to look forward to as well as other normal classroom routines. We have kicked of the Grade 5 Careers unit by deciding on a name for our nation for Earn & Learn. Earn and Learn is an economics program that is based around the establishment of a nation within the classroom where students earn wages, start their own businesses, pay taxes and bills while learning about budgeting, buying and banking. All three Grade 5 classes decided on a nation name and try to incorporate the teachers name into it so the other classes know which nation is which. The whole class voted and we are now known as ‘Everish’. Throughout the term you will hear the students talking about their country and their passports, their jobs and visiting other nations…..this all refers to our classroom and the other two Grade 5 classrooms. Our Grade 4 students get the bonus of seeing this in action and having minor roles within the nation which will be excellent preparation for when they do Earn and Learn next year. Stay tuned for more details……

Bike Ed is on this term.

Students learn safety and skills on their bikes.  They learn to ride in groups safely and take control of their bike in a variety of situations.  The program finishes with a ride around the school for the Grade 4s and a ride to Bayswater Park for Grade 5s to which parents are welcome to attend.

4/5A Roster for Bike ED:

I also need some helpers for about an hour after school on Tuesday the 14th October to help me sort the luck bags ready for the fete. It will be a bit of fun, a few snacks and a few laughs!!! Please let me know if you can help out with this. – the more the merrier!!

GRADE 4 –

A notice has gone home about making miniature bikes as part of our angles unit. Parent helpers are needed for assisting the students to cut and make dowel bikes.

GRADE 5 –

Peer Support

Peer support is a program that helps children develop responsibility, confidence, leadership and make new friends. The Grade 5 students will work with Grade 1 students on a weekly basis in activities about getting along together, feeling good about themselves, learning how to help and listen to others and to talk about any problems.

*The Grade 5s will need a box (approximately a shoe box size) for storing all of their equipment for running activities with the grade 1s. Can these please be brought to school by Wednesday the 15th so we can decorate them.

Final post for Term 3

Final Post for Term 3…

Well as the sun sets on term 3 and I sit here reflecting on everything that we have accomplished this term I think it is fitting to mention some of the highlights in 4/5A this term. We have had Grade 5 camp, pyjama day, Jump Rope for Heart, Hooptime, Fampa, Murrindindi visiting, footsteps, the school disco, Revved Up & M Power, an awesome History Museum and convict day, Footy day and happy hour…..it’s no wonder we are all exhausted! Most of these you have read about throughout the term so I will just tell you about the History museum and convict day from this week.

To end our the Grade 5 ‘History of the 1850s’ unit we celebrated all of the learning about life in the 1850s and the gold rush by dressing up in olden days clothes and participating in some special history activities. They participated in a ‘gold rush’ in the 4/5A diggings, an old fashioned school and played some old 1850s style games outside. Part of this special day was to make exhibits and display then in our Grade 5 History Museum. The students worked really hard for 3 weeks creating a an exhibit of an influential person in the 1850s Gold rush in Ballarat. On the 17th September parents, grand-parents and friends came to visit and see all of our work. The displays were fantastic, the students put so much thought into their research and their display skills. It was a brilliant effort and all of the students should be very proud of themselves. Thank you to all of the visitors who were able to come and have a look.

Not to forget our little Grade 4 convicts who looked equally as authentic! The convicts set up their own display and wrote a ‘message in a bottle’ letter about the conditions on the First Fleet ship they were on.

Grade 5 Gold Rush IMG_0105 IMG_0114 IMG_0117 IMG_0138

An entertaining day was had by all.

In Maths next term we will be starting with fractions and decimals. For our inquiry topics we will be learning about:

GRADE 4 – communication; how people communicate through newspapers and television news broadcasts. Over the holidays can each Grade 4 student please collect a newspaper of some type to bring along to use in class.

GRADE 5 – economics; we will turn our classroom into a mini nations, have a government earn ‘wages’, pay tax, rent and bills! This is all done through an interactive program using scenarios and Earn & Learn money. It is an engaging program that will teach the students lots about finances and money management.

Don’t forget those bike ed payments next term and please remember to put your name down to help out at the Lucky Bag stall at the fete!!

Have a fantastic holiday, see you next term on Monday 6th October

WEEK 9 & 10 TERM 3

A variety of things happening in Grade 4 and 5 last week and this week. Please check out the Grade 4 or Grade 5 pages for specifics….

In Maths we learned all about the footy finals and how the draw works. It was really interesting and even some of the girls who started off say “I don’t understand how it works?!?” had a great time and now have a full understanding of a sports fixture. Some of the students took the sheets home to explain it to their families. I have attached it below if you’d like to have a game – its really fun!

Sporting finals board – all you need is this sheet and a dice.

Whole class reminders….

Things to remember:
– Note and payment for Bike Ed by the end of next week.
– Keep volunteering for the 4/5A LUCKY BAG stall at the Fete.

-Keep the lucky bags coming in this week, we still need more to make our stall successful.
– Next week is the last week of term and we will be having Happy Hour next Friday starting at 11.30. It is also Footy colours day so wear your AFL, NRL or soccer colours
– Portfolios home next Friday – last day of term.

More WEEK 8 TERM 3…

I couldn’t let another week go by without mentioning all of the cool things that have been happening at BHPS this week….

It started with the Grade 4 Footy Fampa on Wednesday night. Last night the Grade 4′s hosted their Footy FAMPA night at school. There were over 30 families participating and by the laughter and smiles, all had an exciting night. We kicked off the night with drinks, pies and sausage rolls whilst answering a “footy jargon” trivia sheet. After that we went back to the classrooms and participated in several mathematical activities. By far the most entertaining was the footy handball competition (it was a smashing success). The target was set up and the children did very well, however, the parents were more accurate hitting the classroom floor, wall and various classroom charts that were around the target area. After all the excitement about who was the best handballer, we finally had three winning families. Congratulations to the Enery family, the Monro family and the McNee family. They were so happy being the champions. Or maybe it was the prize of a huge block of chocolate! We finished off the evening with prizes and the answers to the trivia. As teachers we had a fabulous time watching parents and children working side by side applying Maths to real life situations and thank those who were able to support our annual Maths Footy FAMPA. Special thanks goes to our Math’s gurus Sue Hartley and Julie Dalton who attended our night, supporting this very worthwhile evening.

1 2 4 5 6 7 8 9

The action kept coming this week at the school disco last night. I saw some amazing dance moves and Tamika and I even got the ‘Nutbush’ going! Everyone enjoyed themselves.

A notice has now gone home to invite parent/grandparents/special friends to come along and have a look at our Grade 5 History museum. The museum will be open from 12.30 – 1.30 on Wednesday the 17th of September. On this day the students are encouraged to come along dressed up in old fashioned clothing to add an ‘1850s’ atmosphere to the day. A great place to get dress up clothes for this type of event is from op shops and I heard on the radio that Savers are having a 50% everything sale this weekend!

Some costume ideas:

Boys:

Miners, children, gentlemen, Chinese miner, trooper (old fashioned police officer). During this time the boys often wore a cap and check shirt or plain shirt with a waistcoat or vest. They often wore braces with their trousers. The miners wore a coloured shirt with a wide brimmed hat and a scarf tied around their neck. The rich gentlemen wore a long jacket and top hat, often with a beard!

IMG_1508 IMG_1580.

Girls:

Skirts and dresses were worn long. On young girls the dresses were below the knees and on women they were all the way to the ground. The ladies wore a shawl to keep them warm and a bonnet or mop cap. Girls wore their hair in two long plaits and women’s hair was most often in a bun or long plait.

IMG_1577

As the Grade 4s are learning about the convicts of the First Fleet, they will be joining in with the dress up fun by coming dressed as convicts from the 1700s! A very similar style of dress was worn during this time in history. Some of the convicts looked like this:

CONVICTS

Some Grade 5 fun!:

The Grade 5’s have learned heaps about the Eureka Stockade and how it helped to shape the future of Victoria. The Ballarat M.A.D.E (Museum of Australian Democracy at Eureka) is running a competition to create your own version of the events of the Eureka Stockade in Minecraft! To enter this cool competition go to the following link:

http://www.made.org/WhatsOn/Events/MinecraftCompetition.aspx

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!
